Hello,
I'm an old SL player but I'm just discovering copybot.
browsing the forum I saw a lot of thread talking about ban but I can't find a post concerning the causes of ban.
So I'm not sure...
Is it safe to use copybot to copy items ? import them ?
Which precautions should I take ?
What behaviour can cause a ban ?

Thk you for your answer and sorry if it's already asked several times

Just follow rules of common sense:
#1 Never share copybotted items (not even with friends)
#2 Always use a root object of the original creator (this can be a demo item, renamed and made small)
#3 Make sure the LOD of your object doesnt look too different (A object collapsing into a triangle is suspicious)
#4 Mimic the original item as much as possible, if it gives a message or dialog when clicked, make sure it does.
#5 Dont hangout in the store where you copybotted the items from

CopyBotting is always safe, the risk is only with uploading and sharing.

thk you jagiwig for your answer.
I will investigate about the root object

when you say uploading, you mean to the marketplace right ?
cause what I understood so far to copy mesh objects is
download XML
uses meshesSL
and upload in SL (paying the fee)

so, maybe I missed something Shrug.001

The risk of being banned start as soon as you upload
Because from than on, your actions inworld will decide if you get banned or not.

For root you just need to find a demo or previously purchased object of the original creator.
When attached as root, everyone checking your copybotted item will see the original creator's name.

This will only protect you from superficial inspection, but if someone does a deeper inspection they may see you as creator of the linked objects.
This is why you should not to hang out in places where the creator or staff is likely to visit.

thk you for your explainations
I understand the idea: be discreet

I didn't have the time to search for tutorials about the root attachment, so I'm stil a bit confused.
In the process i described in my previous post there is no root attachment involved, I understand the concept but not what it means in reality.

Anyway I don't want to take too much of your time, your help was already very precious and much appreciated
thk you

Don't worry, I will help you until you get it.
Let's pretend we purchased a hat from Philip Linden or got a DEMO from him.

We first edit the hat, check the creator and modify permissions, than click Unlink
[Image: EbDLFIF.png]

You delete the pieces of the hat you don't need, and decide which piece you keep (we only kept the red ball).
You can also resize the piece and make it small and transparent.

In our example we are Brent Linden, we don't want to be seen as the creator of the chair.

With the chair selected, we hold shift and click our DEMO item,
When both are selected you click Link

After the chair is linked, you will see the creator is now Philip Linden, you just need to change the Name and Description and you are done.

thk you so much
I understand what that means now
but ...
obviously there is a but
I'm stuck at the first step, I can't change permissions ofthe demo object I'm using DArkstorm if that's important also I'm trying to modify a rigged mesh and not wearing it, I put it on the floor but it's the same when I wear it

Information
You can't change the permission, you need to verify if the permisson is modify.
So this is the part where you have to be lucky to find the right object. But if you find a object of a creator that is modify, you can easily rip anything from them. This is why some creators have decided to not give modify objects to anyone, but 9 out of 10 times this is not a problem.
