What are you actually trying to upload?
If it is something you are wearing:
a). are you making sure you have  rigging selected in the upload window?
b.) Make sure LOD is set to zero for Lowest and Low LOD.
c). Select Physics as cube in the physics tab.
d.) If you are have problems texturing the BOM mesh you can follow this tutorial:

You can run your own stand alone sim on your desktop
that is not connected to the internet to test and trial uploads and save money by using  sim-on-a-stick.

(This version is NOT bento enabled but you can update that using Opensim , ask for details when needed)

Is there any specific error you are running into
e.g. Material of Model is not a subset of reference material
a solution that works sometimes: go to Advanced and Show Debug Options (Ctrl + Alt + Shift + S in Firestorm) and find ImporterLegacyMatching Set to TRUE!

You could also use the beta grid for free testing. You want to use main firestorm viewer or ll viewer for uploading because it supports physics, well, especially if you have physics but even still  its best practice.

That's only if you are premium and you want to risk that by uploadeing copybotted items!
I wouldn't call it best practice at all O.o.
If you are so new to uploading and copying, you want to mitigate risk as much as possible.

Should setting up sim-on-a-stick prove too daunting, you might consider logging into one of the hundreds of opensim grids available to hone your skills.
