In SL u gotta pay to upload mesh, in other grid it is free - try to find opensim grid with free mesh upload, will make u happier.

There are basically two different types of .dae files, also known as Collada files. The one is static, which means it does not change shape but can be scaled, positioned and rotated (Like some hair, accessories and shoes).
See the following link for more info:

The other is rigged, which means it contains weighted data on each vertex (The intersections where polygons meat.) this allows the mesh to conform to the movement of an avatars skeleton (Like cloths), these types of files can not be scaled, positioned or rotated.

You can upload either one for free on the BETA gird also known as the Preview grid or ADITI.

You will not be able to use this grid to socialize with your friends on the other grid. It is strictly for testing.

You mentioned uploading and using those files for yourself only? When you upload anything, it will only show in your inventory. It will not be shared unless you yourself decide to share it with someone else by transferring the item in question.

I hope this info helps you. Happy uploading!
