Ok this is a really cool one here Meshlab is a simple mesh/3D application and file converter for most. Although you can make really cool mesh from scratch. It supports a ton of file formats including DAE.

Also if your special viewer supports export .obj, convert with Meshlad to .DAE, you have a item ready for upload to SL as mesh, i find its great for converting your sculpties to mesh with no problems :)
